SBS Press Announces $2000 Contest for Best Reading Group Guide Written by a High School Student for the New Book North Pond Dawn

    -
Today SBS Press announced a $2000 contest for the best reading group guide written by a high school student for North Pond Dawn, the new novel describing the emotional side of cancer by David Roddy.

The guide should be no longer than 1200 words and should be submitted by December 1, 2006. It will be published on the North Pond Dawn website along with the author’s name and be made available to reading groups around the country. Nine honorable mentions carry a prize of $50 each.

Roddy, who has an incurable blood cancer, explained, “Rather than write our own guide to the book, we thought it would be valuable to hear the perspectives of our readers. This is a great way for high school students to communicate their thoughts and a chance to make some money at the same time.”

According to Song Bok Soon, the CEO of SBS Press, “The guide should demonstrate insight into the book’s themes and characters and be helpful to readers of all ages – from high school students interested in an emotional adventure to middle aged mothers with a parent who has cancer to a religious leader who needs to counsel the families of those who have life-threatening cancer.”

The educational aspects of the contest are likely to appeal to high school English teachers. Not only do the students have to read and write well, they have to research and determine the format of a useful reading group guide. Roddy noted, "We've already had inquiries from teachers who are considering the contest as a class project. That seems like an ideal way to initiate serious discussion and analysis of the book's themes."

SBS Press Issues "Frequently Asked Questions" Document about the North Pond Dawn High School Student $2000 Reading Group Guide Contest

Thanks for your enthusiastic response to the book and the contest. Here are answers to the questions that we have received so far.

    Q. Can I send emails to highschools@sbspress.com with questions about the contest ?

    A. Yes, but in order to be fair to all contestants, we will only answer them in the public SBS Press Blog at http://sbspress.blogspot.com . We don't plan to provide lots of hints; we will focus on the administrative details. So you don't have to visit every day. But check back periodically just in case.

    Q. What is a Reading Group Guide ?

    A. The first step of the project is to do some research and develop a Reading Group Guide format that best suits the goals set out in the contest flyer in the High Schools tab of the book's website at www.northponddawn.com . The flyer is a pdf document titled "North Pond Dawn $2000 Contest".

    Q. Can several entrants join together and split the $2000 prize ?

    A. Yes, but all participants of the ten winning entries must sign a document that they are high school students.

    Q. Can a whole class do it as a project ?

    A. Yes.

    Q. How will you prevent professional writers from masquerading as high school students ?

    A. We will call the high schools of the ten winners and verify that they are students there.

    Q. Who owns the copyright to the winning guides ?

    A. The respective authors of the winning guides own the copyright. In return for the contest prize money, you grant us an "unlimited use" license for the next 100 years. We do keep the author's name on the reading group guide at all times.

Readers Give Rave Reviews for North Pond Dawn by David Roddy

A reader from San Francisco, California writes:

“This is a truly touching book. I cried after I read it. It's like Love Story meets The Perfect Storm. Although the author is the main character, his fiancée is the real inspiration in the book. She is a courageous and wonderful woman. Now I know why the author is 'the happiest man in the world.' Highly recommended.”

A reader from Boston, Massachusetts writes:

“This is a deeply personal insight into true love in the midst of all kinds of disasters. Once I started reading, I couldn't put it down. The relationship between the author and his fiancée is especially inspiring. She is funny, strong, loveable, and wise as she supports the author who has cancer. I loved the book.”

A reader from Evanston, Illinois writes:

“It was inspiring to hear the story of your healing, your deliverance from confusion and despair, and the gift of meaning you have been given. It was also awesome to read how the faith and the practical, loving courage of Shin throughout your cancer nourished, renewed, and gave you hope.”

SBS Press To Distribute North Pond Dawn Audio MP3 Book Excerpts on Yahoo! Podcasts Website for Use on Apple iPods and Other MP3 Players

    -
Today SBS Press joined major publishers Simon & Shuster, Little Brown, Farrar Straus & Giroux, Henry Holt, Picador, and St. Martin's by offering online MP3 audio podcast book excerpts that can be downloaded and played on Apple iPods and other MP3 players.

The first series of SBS Press podcasts of its new book North Pond Dawn by David Roddy, a heartwarming story about cancer, will be listed in the recently opened Yahoo! Podcasts directory and be available for easy download from their site via an RSS feed.

The MP3 audio podcasts of North Pond Dawn are also available on the book’s website, http://www.northponddawn.com/ . The site includes a dozen excerpts from the book totaling over 50 megabytes with over a half hour playing time.

Roddy explained, “This is a way to personally reach our readers and communicate the warmth of the book. Plus we will be posting additional MP3 audio interviews, memories, and discussions in the coming months. I enjoy talking about the book and can use the podcasts to explore aspects of my life with my fiancée Shin that aren’t in the published version.”

According to Song Bok Soon, the CEO of SBS Press, “Before he learned that he had incurable cancer, David Roddy was an internationally acclaimed technology and Internet consultant, so he is right up to date on the new ways of delivering audio to Apple iPods and other MP3 players. So it was easy for SBS Press to join the major publishers who are starting to offer audio content over the Internet in this exciting Podcast revolution.”

She explained that the marketing aspect of the podcasts helps independent publishers like SBS Press, “Readers tell us that it is inspiring to hear the author reading sections of the book and to hear him talk about other aspects of his life. So we foster a continuing relationship with existing readers of North Pond Dawn who might mention the book to their friends. Plus the diversity of the audio clips available give potential customers a nice preview of the book so they can see if they would like to buy it.”

    Special Message from the Author

Sunshine on the Snow - Sometimes we think of ice and snow as cold, hard, gray, and dangerous -- much like cancer, bankruptcy, depression, and death. But when the sunshine sparkles through the snow-covered pine trees and bounces in a brilliant flash off the glassy ice, it brings a special magical feeling. Like the relationship with the one who truly loves you, it has a warmth that melts all obstacles. I wrote from my heart. I hope you like it.
